Martta Tuomaala
Martta Tuomaala is a multidisciplinary artist based in Helsinki. Tuomaala focuses on various forms of film, video, and installation. Her artistic practice involves elements of socially engaged art and militant research. Common themes in her artworks include workers’ everyday life, the struggles of different individuals and communities, and abuse of power. Tuomaala has worked in various low-income fields for many years, and her own experiences have inspired her to create projects emphasizing workers’ rights.
Tuomaala is currently a board member in AV-Arkki, The Distribution Centre for Finnish Media Art and Artists’ Association Kiila. She is also a member of Miracle Workers Collective that represented Finland at the Venice Biennale in 2019. At the moment, Tuomaala is working on a feature documentary that explores the work of personal trainers and group exercise instructors. Tuomaala’s artworks have been exhibited widely in museums, galleries, and festivals internationally.
